Mineralogical Society of Arizona May 2021 Meeting
Topic: Tom Kaye: “Laser Stimulated Fluorescence from Earth to Mars”
Time: Thursday, May 20, 2021 07:30 PM Arizona
MSA’s May 20th program “Laser Stimulated Fluorescence from Earth to Mars” will be presented by Tom Kaye. Tom’s program will present exciting new technology helping locate fossils, view hidden properties of cave formations and existing fossils and its potential for Earth and planetary mining and exploration.
Tom Kaye is an independent researcher with the Foundation for Scientific Advancement. His primary areas of research are paleontology and astrophysics. He maintains his own personal analytical lab in Sierra Vista and currently runs two telescopes obtaining follow up data for targets of interest from the TESS space telescope. He was recently involved in the discovery of the first ever exoplanet around a white dwarf and has published numerous papers on soft tissue preservation in feathered dinosaurs.
Tom has spent the last 6 years pioneering the use of Laser Stimulated Fluorescence in paleontology and cave science. He uses fluorescence to discover hidden chemical signatures showing fossil soft tissues and differences in mineral growth patterns in caves. His laser for the first time, allows panoramic fluorescence imaging of underground caverns. He has also recently developed an autonomous, laser equipped night flying drone to seek out fossils in the badlands. His talk will show published discoveries his team has made from around the world and make an argument on why we should send a laser to Mars.
